Does your brick wall need tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing, also called repointing, is cutting the worn mortar out of the joints in your brick wall and packing them with fresh mortar, so the bricks stay right where they are and your home in Carlsbad, CA gets a wall that sheds water again.
Most folks call me after they've brushed against a wall and come away with sand on their sleeve, or spotted a crack running along the joints by the chimney. The price comes down mostly to how much of the wall needs new joints and how hard it is to reach, and the schedule turns on the size of the wall, the weather and whether the city wants a permit. I'll look at your wall and leave you a written estimate with your own figure.
How can you tell your brick joints need tuckpointing?
Mortar that crumbles away
If the mortar turns to sand when you rub it, or you find grit piled along the base of the wall, the joints have gone soft. Water soaks into soft joints easily, and the longer that goes on, the more mortar washes out and the deeper we have to cut.
Cracks along the joints
Hairline cracks in the mortar, or a thin gap opening between a brick and the mortar around it, mean the joint has let go of the brick. Those cracks carry water into the wall, and that's how a mortar job slowly turns into a brick job.
Joints sunk back from the brick
When the mortar sits back from the face and you can see the square edges of the bricks, weather has worn the joints down. Shallow wear is a simple fix, but once the joints go deep the bricks lose their support and start working loose.
How we do tuckpointing on your brick
I start by looking at how old your house is and what the original mortar is made of, because that tells me what the new mix has to be. Mortar wasn't made with portland cement until after the turn of the twentieth century, so an older wall usually has a softer mortar, and the new joints should be as strong as the old ones or weaker, since a harder mix can damage the brick in a way that can't be repaired. Then we cut out the worn mortar, using hand tools where the brick is soft because grinders are faster but can damage the masonry around the joint, pack the joints with fresh mortar and tool them to match the shape and color of the joints around them.
New joints won't hold up if the water that ruined the old ones keeps coming, so we look for the cause first and plan for a leaking downspout or a drainage problem to be fixed as part of the job, and if that part is outside our trade I'll tell you who to call. If some bricks are cracked or flaking, we take care of them with brick repair so the wall comes out sound and not just patched. And when the driveway along that wall has sunk or cracked, driveway pavers are often the next thing people ask us about.
Repointing the worn spots
This suits a wall where the damage sits in patches, like the base of a chimney or the stretch under a downspout, while the rest of the joints are still hard. We match the color and shape of the old joints closely so the repair blends with the rest of the wall.
Repointing the whole wall
When most of the joints are soft or cracked, doing the whole face at once usually makes more sense than chasing patches every few years. It also leaves you one even color across the wall instead of a patchwork of old and new.

Here's how a tuckpointing job runs from your first call to the walk-around at the end, and what you'll have in hand before you decide anything.

Tell us where the mortar is failing and roughly how old the house is. We'll set up a time for me to come out and see it.
I look the wall over
I walk the wall with you, check what the old mortar is like and explain what I see, including anything feeding water into it. You get a written estimate that spells out the work, so you know exactly what you'd be paying for.
We do the work together
Once you're ready, we check permits with the city, protect your yard and plantings, then cut out and refill the joints. Before we pack up, I walk the finished wall with you.
Why Carlsbad homeowners call M&K for tuckpointing
The owner looks at your wall
I'm the one who comes out to look the job over and talk it through, and I'm on site checking in while our small crew of experienced masons does the work. You talk to the same person from the estimate to the walk-around, so nothing you asked for gets lost.
Mortar repair in Carlsbad since 2013
I learned the trade under a veteran mason and started this business in Carlsbad in 2013, and careful brick and mortar repair that blends in is what we're best known for. After 13 years of matching old joints, I know what to look for before the first one gets cut out.
Licensed in California, insured on every job
We're fully licensed and insured. That matters on tuckpointing, because the crew works on ladders and cuts mortar right beside your windows and walls.
On this job the mix matters most, and the only way to get it right is to see your wall in person. Get in touch and tell us what you're seeing.
M&K's tuckpointing and brick work in Carlsbad
Before we touch your wall, we check with the City of Carlsbad, because the city requires a permit for most construction work and only some kinds are exempt. If your job needs one, we pull it, book the inspections and keep you posted. Who does the work matters too. California's limit for small jobs done without a contractor's license is $1,000, and that only holds when the job needs no permit and the person doing it has no one working for them, so it's fair to ask anyone quoting your wall about their license.
Around Carlsbad, mortar mostly gives out where water keeps finding it, behind planters, at the base of chimneys and where sprinklers hit the same stretch of wall every morning. We see the same thing on jobs in Oceanside and Vista, so every visit starts with finding the water.
Questions about tuckpointing in Carlsbad
How do I know if my mortar needs tuckpointing?
Crumbling mortar, hairline cracks, cracks between the brick and the mortar, and joints worn back more than about a quarter inch are the usual signs a wall needs repointing. Any one of them is reason enough to have the joints looked at, and photos of the worst spots help me tell you what I'm likely to find.
How long does tuckpointing last?
Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, depending on how much weather the wall takes and what the mortar is made of, while the brick itself can last well over 100 years. That's why the joints are the part of a brick wall that gets renewed every few decades.
Do I need a permit for tuckpointing in Carlsbad?
It may need one, since Carlsbad requires a permit for most construction work, and we confirm with the city before we start your job. Even work the city exempts from a permit still has to meet building codes, California codes and city rules, so the wall gets done to the same standard either way.
How do I choose a good tuckpointing contractor?
Ask to see repointing work they've done, because a good mason or bricklayer isn't always a good repointer. You can also have a contractor repoint a small hidden section as a sample, and ask what mortar they plan to use. I'm happy to talk through the mix with you.
How much does tuckpointing cost in Carlsbad?
There's no set price, because tuckpointing is priced by the wall in front of us, mostly how many joints need cutting out, how deep the old mortar has gone and how high we're working. Soft old mortar we rake out by hand, or a drainage fix that has to happen first, adds to the job, and you'll see each part spelled out in the written estimate.
What causes the white film on brick after tuckpointing?
That white film is called efflorescence, or bloom, and it sometimes shows up in the first few months after repointing. It usually fades on its own through normal weathering, so give it some time before you worry about it.

Brick repair
When bricks are cracked, loose or flaking, fresh mortar alone won't save the wall, and replacing them with a close match keeps the repair from showing.
Driveway pavers
If the driveway beside your house has cracked or settled, interlocking pavers give you a surface that can be lifted and reset in sections instead of torn out.
