What does a stone mason do, and which stone should I use?
Stone masonry in Carlsbad, CA, means setting natural or manufactured stone into walls, fences and paving, with or without mortar, plus the cleaning, clear sealing and caulking that finish the job. Done right, you end up with stone that fits the job your wall actually does.
Most people call me with one of two things in mind. Either it's an old stone wall with joints falling out, or it's a plain wall, fence or path they'd like to see in stone. If all you're after is the look of stone on a wall you already have, stone veneer installation may be all you need. The price moves with the square footage, whether you choose natural or manufactured stone, how the stone is fixed to the wall and, on an old wall, how deep the worn mortar goes. The schedule depends mostly on the weather and on whether your property needs a permit before we start. The written estimate I leave you spells out the numbers for your own job.
How can you tell your stone wall needs work?
Mortar crumbling from joints
If you can rub sand out of the joints with a finger, or there are gaps where mortar used to be, the mortar has stopped doing its job. The longer it waits, the deeper water gets in, and a joint repair turns into loose stones.
Stones that rock or fall
A stone that moves when you push it, or one lying in the planter below, usually means the joints around it are gone or the wall behind it is shifting. One loose stone lets the next ones go, and resetting a whole section costs more than tightening a few.
Damp patches that won't dry
Dark spots that hang around for days after rain usually mean water is getting in faster than the wall can let it out. The cause is often a downspout, sprinklers or mortar that's too hard. I look for where that water starts, because if you fix the joints without stopping it, you'll be fixing them again.
How we handle stone masonry, from picking the stone to the last joint
I start by asking what the wall has to do, because natural and manufactured stone do different jobs. Manufactured veneer is a lightweight, cement-based product cast to look like stone. It isn't load bearing, so it can dress the face of a wall or column but it can't hold anything up. When the stone itself has to carry weight, natural stone is the right pick. Once you've chosen, we set the stone, fill and shape the joints, clean the face and add clear sealing or caulking where the job calls for it. On older stone walls we rake out the worn mortar and repoint with a mortar that lets the wall dry out, because mortar that traps moisture ends up damaging the stone around it.
Stone work often sits next to other masonry that needs the same care. If your house also has brick with worn joints, our brick pointing matches the new mortar to the old so the repair blends in. When a crack runs from a stone wall into the house, I'll tell you if it looks like the house is settling. In that case foundation repair has to come first, or the new stone will just crack again.
Natural stone for walls that carry weight
This suits garden walls, fences and paving where the stone does real work, and it can be laid with or without mortar. It's heavier and slower to set, which shows up in the price, but it's the right choice when the wall has to hold something up.
Manufactured veneer for the look of stone
This suits an existing wall, column or fireplace face where you want stone on the surface without the weight. It's lighter and usually quicker to put on, but it needs a solid wall behind it because it carries nothing itself.

Why Carlsbad homeowners call M&K Carlsbad Concrete and Masonry for stone
The owner comes out himself
I'm the one who looks at your wall and talks it through with you. A small crew of experienced masons does the work, and I'm on site checking in as it goes, so the person who gave you the estimate is the one keeping an eye on the result.
In business since 2013
I learned the trade under a veteran mason before starting this business in Carlsbad. That training is why we'd rather repair and match what's already there than tear it out.
Fully licensed and insured, every job
We're fully licensed and insured, and I'm happy to show you the paperwork when you ask. That protects you and your house while our crew is working on your property.
The most important thing on stone work is matching the stone and mortar to what the wall really does. Tell us about your wall and I'll come out and take a look.
Stone walls, fences and paving in Carlsbad
Much of Carlsbad sits in the coastal zone. There, either the city or the California Coastal Commission approves permits, and properties need one for most types of development. Stone walls, fences and paving can fall under that, and I won't guess from the driveway whether yours does. We check with the city's building office before work starts. When a permit is needed, we pull it, book the inspections and keep you posted.
Around here we see plenty of older stone garden walls with tired joints, right next to newer homes where the owners want stone on a front wall or column. So the natural-or-manufactured question comes up a lot. It's the same mix on jobs in Oceanside and Vista, and we work in plenty of the cities around them too.
Questions about stone masonry in Carlsbad
What does stone masonry cost around San Diego?
Brick and masonry work in the San Diego area usually costs about $11 to $33 per square foot. That's the going range across the market, not a quote from us. Where your job falls depends on what I see on site, so the written estimate I leave you is the number to plan around.
Should my stone be glued on or anchored?
Your house decides that, not habit. Whether stone goes on with adhesive or with anchors usually depends on the structure behind it, the load it'll carry, the type of stone and even the local climate. When I come out, I'll show you how those factors apply to your wall so you know why we're going one way and not the other.
Is my Carlsbad property in the coastal zone?
There's a fair chance it is, since about 37% of Carlsbad sits in the coastal zone, where properties follow their own development standards and zoning rules. The surest way to find out is to email the city's planning staff at planning@carlsbadca.gov with your address or assessor's parcel number. They can tell you which agency handles your coastal permit. Staff also meet with owners in person on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
What license should a stone mason have in California?
Look for a contractor licensed by the state licensing board in the C-29 Masonry classification, which covers installing natural and manufactured stone. California's minor work exemption from the license rule went from $500 to $1,000. It only covers work that needs no permit, done by someone who employs no one on the project.
What is the best way to remove old mortar from a stone wall?
For older walls, a preservation guide for historic masonry says that taking mortar out by hand, with chisels and mash hammers, in most cases poses the least threat of damage and gives the best final result. A mash hammer is a short, heavy hand hammer. The guide also notes that this is labor-intensive work. On stone walls with wide joints, the old mortar may need to come out several inches deep, which means more to remove and more new mortar to place.
How long does a stone masonry job take?
The time on site depends on the wall's size, the stone, how much old mortar has to come out and whether a permit review comes first. I'll go over the schedule with you when I'm out there. Weather can add a wait after the work, too. One industry guide calls for protecting fresh manufactured stone veneer for 48 hours when it's 40°F or colder, and for 72 hours when it's over 100°F.
