Are pavers the right choice for your Carlsbad driveway?
Driveway pavers in Carlsbad are interlocking concrete pavers laid over a packed layer of crushed stone, and the joints between them help cut down on the cracking you get with poured concrete and asphalt.
Most people call me once the old driveway has cracked across the middle, started to sink where the tires sit or just looks worn out, and they're deciding whether to pour it again or switch to pavers. What moves the price is how big the driveway is, how much old surface and soil has to come out and get hauled off, how deep the stone base needs to be for your ground, and which paver you pick. The schedule mostly turns on the tear-out and haul-off, and on whether any of the work reaches the curb, where the city has its say. I'll look it over with you and leave a written estimate with your own numbers, and if the front walk needs the same treatment, we can match it with a paver walkway.
How do you know your driveway is ready for pavers?
Cracks across the concrete
A long crack across a poured driveway usually means the slab moved because the ground under it settled or swelled. Water gets into the crack and widens it a little more every year, and patches almost never match the rest of the slab.
Dips where the tires roll
On an existing paver driveway, ruts in the wheel paths usually mean the soil or base underneath wasn't packed well enough. Left alone, the low pavers start to rock, the joint sand works out and the dip spreads to the pavers around it.
Water that sits after rain
If puddles hang around long after a rain, the surface has lost its slope or the base has gone soft in that spot. Standing water keeps softening the ground underneath, so the low spot tends to grow until that area is rebuilt.
How we lay driveway pavers so they stay level
Most of a paver driveway's life gets decided before the first paver goes down, so that's where I put the real care. We have the underground lines marked, break out the old driveway and haul it away, then dig down and pack the soil until it's firm, because loose soil is what lets a driveway sink later. On top of that we lay the crushed stone base in layers and pack each one, going deeper than we would under a walkway, with the final depth set by your soil, your drainage and the cars it has to carry. Then comes a thin bed of sand, the pavers in the pattern you picked, a solid edge to keep them from spreading, and joint sand swept in and packed. I also look at where your downspouts and runoff go, because water rushing across the driveway is what washes those joints out over time.
A new driveway often brings the rest of the front yard into view. If it's cut into a slope, the bank beside it may need retaining wall construction to keep soil off the pavers, and tired brick steps, planters or columns along the drive are a job for our masonry restoration work, so they look like they belong next to the new surface.
Standard interlocking pavers
These suit most driveways, because the tight joints send water off to the street or a drain and the upkeep is mostly sweeping and topping up the joint sand now and then. They come in plenty of colors and patterns, so it's easy to match the house.
Permeable pavers
These suit owners who want rainwater to soak into the ground instead of running down the driveway, since the wider joints are filled with small stone that lets water through. They ask more of you in upkeep, and if you're leaning this way, I'll walk you through exactly what that involves before you decide.

What happens when you call about a paver driveway in Carlsbad?
Here's how it goes from your first call or form to the day we walk the finished driveway together.
Call or send the form
Reach us at (760) 496-5418 or through the contact form, and tell us roughly how big the driveway is. A few photos of the curb end help, and we'll set a time for me to come out.
I look it over with you
I check the soil, the slope and where the water goes, and I explain what I see as we walk it. You get a written estimate that spells out the tear-out, the base, the pavers and the haul-off, so you can see what you're paying for.
We build it and walk it
Once you're ready, we check permits with the city, protect your yard and get to work, with me checking in as our crew goes. Before we pack up, we walk the finished driveway with you.
Why Carlsbad homeowners call M&K Carlsbad Concrete and Masonry for pavers
I come out and stay involved
I'm the one who comes out to look at your driveway and talk it through, and once the work starts, I'm on site checking in while our small crew of experienced masons builds it. That means the person who wrote your estimate is the one answering your questions on the job.
In business since 2013
I learned the trade under a veteran mason and started this business in 2013, so we've had 13 years to see which driveways hold up and which ones sink. Most of the time, the difference traces back to the soil and the base.
Your soils report put to use
The city keeps most Carlsbad soils reports in its public records, and if your house has one, I'll read it before I size the base. It tells me how firm your ground is, which is a big part of how deep the stone needs to go.
Fully licensed and insured
We're fully licensed and insured, so you're covered while we dig, haul and build on your property. California has a C-12 earthwork and paving license that covers digging, grading and laying paving, so it's fair to ask any installer what license covers your job.
The ground under your driveway decides how it holds up, so the first step is letting me see yours. Call (760) 496-5418 or send us your project details and we'll set a time.
Paver driveways, curbs and slopes around Carlsbad
In Carlsbad, the street end of your driveway is usually where city rules come in. The city requires a right-of-way permit for any work or stored materials on public streets, sidewalks or easements, and most right-of-way here runs 10 feet back from the face of the curb, so the apron, the sloped part that meets the street, and a bit of the drive behind it are often on city land. The city's engineering counter can confirm the exact line for your street during regular business hours. Carlsbad also allows no dumpsters or storage pods in the paved street or on the sidewalk, so we plan a spot on your property for the bin that hauls off the old driveway. We check with the city before work starts, and when a permit is needed, we pull it, book the inspections and keep you posted.
We're based in Carlsbad and work all around it. A lot of the driveways we see here climb from the street on a slope, so we watch where runoff heads and how firmly the edges are held, and we meet the same sloped, older drives on jobs in Oceanside and Vista.
Questions about driveway pavers in Carlsbad
What does a paver driveway cost around San Diego?
A paver driveway in the San Diego area usually costs about $10 to $30 per square foot installed. Where yours falls in that range comes down to the size, the digging and haul-off, the base depth and the paver you choose, and your written estimate gives you your own number.
When do I need a city permit for driveway work in Carlsbad?
You need the city's right-of-way permit whenever any of the work or stored materials end up on the street, the sidewalk or a public easement, which often includes the curb end of a driveway. The Carlsbad section above explains where that line usually falls and how we handle the permit.
How long does it take before I can drive on new pavers?
You can usually drive on a new paver driveway right away, because concrete pavers arrive ready to install and can take traffic as soon as they're down. Unlike a poured slab, there's no curing wait, so you get your driveway back quickly.
Do permeable pavers need upkeep?
Yes, permeable pavers need ongoing maintenance, because their surface traps dirt and grit much like the filter in an air conditioner. That upkeep is part of owning them for as long as you have the driveway, so it's the main thing to weigh against standard pavers.
Can I replace my asphalt driveway with pavers?
Yes, and the base that sat under your asphalt is a useful starting point, since a base thickness used under asphalt can typically be used under interlocking pavers. Once the old surface is out, I still check the soil and drainage, because those decide the final depth.
How do I choose a paver driveway contractor in Carlsbad?
Ask each installer how they compact the soil under the pavers, because good compaction is what keeps a paver driveway from settling. A clear, specific answer about packing the soil and then the base tells you more about the finished driveway than the paver samples will.
Other work that pairs with a new driveway
Retaining wall construction
If the bank beside your driveway is slipping, a block or stone wall holds the soil back and keeps dirt and runoff off your new pavers.
Masonry restoration
Old brick steps, columns or planters can look tired next to a fresh driveway, and restoring them brings the mortar, color and finish back in line.
